Do you work with Open Access books?
AEGIS-OA (Activate European Guidance and Incentives for Sustainable Open Access publishing) is inviting university, library, research institute and other types of community-based publishers, publishing platforms and similar stakeholders to provide feedback on the Diamond Open Access Standard (DOAS) adaptation for books.
Open Access books play an important role in scholarly communication, particularly in disciplines and research communities where monographs and edited volumes are central to how knowledge is produced and shared. Yet the practices, workflows and challenges involved in book publishing are not necessarily the same as those of journal publishing.
As part of the EU-funded AEGIS-OA project, we are therefore addressing this and asking the community to help us with feedback on the DOAS adaptation for Open Access books.
From journals to books
The DOAS was originally developed to support quality assurance in Diamond OA journal publishing. It provides a framework that allows publishers and providers to assess their practices against a range of quality standards and identify areas for further development. AEGIS-OA builds on this work while recognising that books have their own specificities, publishing workflows and quality considerations.
The project is now working towards an adaptation of DOAS that can support quality, transparency and good practices in Diamond OA book publishing, while reflecting the diversity of the communities involved.
We are inviting people with experience of Diamond OA book publishing to provide their feedback through a new survey.
We are particularly interested in hearing from:
- university presses;
- library publishers;
- research institute publishers;
- consortia community-based publishers;
- community-based publishing platforms;
- scholarly societies;
- and other stakeholders with relevant experience of OA books.
The survey explores different aspects of quality and publishing practice and asks respondents to provide feedback on sections in the DOAS adaptation for books.

The survey is anonymous and can take up to 80 minutes depending on how many sections you provide feedback on. Please note that all answers should be in English.
